Statement of Purpose

The Construction Trades program prepares students with foundational knowledge and hands-on skills needed for careers in residential, commercial, and industrial construction environments. Through classroom instruction and practical training, students develop technical skills in construction safety, industry operations, forms and foundations, wall systems, material handling, and basic construction estimating.

The program emphasizes workplace safety, proper tool usage, construction techniques, and industry-standard practices aligned with National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) standards. Students receive hands-on training designed to prepare them for entry-level employment and career advancement opportunities within the construction industry.

Each spring, Texas Southmost College hosts a job fair featuring more than 70 employers seeking qualified candidates across a variety of industries. Students and alumni are encouraged to attend, network with employers, and explore employment opportunities related to their field of study.

What is Workforce Training?

Workforce Training at Texas Southmost College provides short-term, skills-focused programs designed to prepare individuals for high-demand careers in industries such as healthcare, industrial trades, business, technology, and criminal justice. Many programs can be completed in six months or less and are designed to help students quickly enter the workforce, advance in their current careers, or gain new technical skills.

How can I enroll in a Workforce Training program?

Students may apply online by visiting the TSC Workforce Training and Continuing Education website and selecting “Apply Now.” Individuals who are not ready to apply may also submit a “Request Information” form to connect with a WTCE team member who can assist with program questions and enrollment guidance.

What documents are required for admission?

Most workforce training programs require minimal documentation unless students are applying for financial assistance. WTCE staff members are available to guide students through program-specific requirements.

Is financial assistance available for Workforce Training programs?

Although federal financial aid may not apply to certain non-credit workforce programs, scholarships and workforce funding opportunities may be available for qualifying students. Eligibility requirements vary depending on the funding source and program. Students may also be required to participate in career readiness activities such as resume development, mock interviews, and job fairs.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Typically, the program is completed in approximately 10 weeks. Program schedules and training hours may vary depending on the course offering and delivery format.

How much time will I need to commit to coursework and assignments?

Most Workforce Training programs are designed so that the majority of instruction, hands-on training, and learning activities take place during scheduled class and lab hours. Students are encouraged to review course materials and practice technical skills outside of class to strengthen their understanding and workplace readiness skills. Depending on the program, some additional studying or practice outside of scheduled training hours may be required.

Will I receive a certificate after completing the program?

Students who successfully complete the program may earn a TSC Certificate of Completion, Occupational Skills Award (OSA), OSHA 10 Certification, NCCER Core Certification, OSHA 308 Certification, and CPR Certification based on successful completion of program requirements and applicable assessments.
